Sinton Dairy has served Colorado for over 125 years
Sinton Dairy is one of the oldest businesses still in operation in Colorado Springs. It began in 1880 when George and Melvin Sinton moved here from Ithaca, New York. Their dairy was located on a small piece of land that is now Willamette Street. Production was small to start; only 14 quarts of milk from 12 red cows delivered by a horse drawn cart to the residents of Colorado Springs at 10 cents a quart.
A little known fact is that Sinton Dairy introduced pasteurization to the Pike’s Peak region in 1907. It was, at that time, a very controversial subject. Three of the five doctors on the town’s board of health favored it; two opposed it and refused to let pasteurized milk be delivered. The impasse was resolved when Melvin Sinton telegraphed food authorities in Washington.
Times have certainly changed in the dairy business over the years. Sinton Dairy processes more than 220 million pounds of milk each year. The production facility and executive office is located on Sinton Road and there are seven branch offices throughout the state along with four independent distributors. Sinton produces all fluid milk products, cultured products, juices and drinks. A new state-of-the-art cottage cheese and sour cream processing room was built in 2003. More than 9 million pounds of cottage cheese and 3 million pounds of sour cream are processed annually. Sinton produces Nordica products, the number one most purchased cottage cheese brand in Colorado.
Sinton Dairy has continued to search for new methods of enhancing the product lines and services they have to offer. Breakthroughs in production technology continually open markets for the ever-expanding variety of dairy products that the modern consumers demand.
Sinton Dairy is proud of its history. We would like to thank the Colorado Springs community and people all over Colorado for making this milestone possible.
